The Future is Here Showcase

Espaço Itau de Cinema | Instituto Moreira Salles

The time for reflection and decision-making is short. Indeed, the future is already at our doorsteps. The films that we exhibit in this section reflect this. The German boy from We'll still be here when you're gone, said exactly this in his speech at the UN. In the Amazon, dam raises questions that need to be attacked now and, on the other hand, DamNation shows that, at least in North America, dams represent the past and not the progress. The films The Last Ocean – to be screened with the support of PEW - and Last Call, make us think on the path we want to take to ensure there still will be healthier life on Earth for many years.

When you’ve gone I’ll still be there

This is the story of three children who are fighting for a better world: Felix, a thirteen-year-old boy, who wants to motivate children all over the world to plant trees.  He hopes to slow down climate change. In Iraq, Roman fights against domestic violence. In Kenia, Fardosa does not want the girls to be circumcised nor to be forced to marry.

Belo Monte: Amazon under High Tension

2014 | França | Doc | 2014

Built in the middle of the Amazon, on the Xingu River, the Belo Monte dam will be in 2015 the third largest hydroelectric dam in the world, with the mission of supplying energy to Brazil's growth. This gigantic work is on the border of the largest indigenous territory in the world, where more than 20,000 Indians, fifty ethnic groups, never been so close to extinction, live. While the bulldozers destroy the forest, the Indians prepare to attack and the workers rebel against the work conditions.

DamNation, Terra de Barragens

DamNation
2014 | USA | Doc | 87min

This powerful film odyssey across America explores the big change in America’s attitude from pride in big dams to the growing awareness that future is bound to the life and health of rivers. Dam removal has moved beyond the fictional Monkey Wrench Gang to go mainstream. Where obsolete dams come down, rivers bound back to life, giving salmon and other wild fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds, after decades without access.

Last Call

Ultima Chiamatta
2013 | Itália e Noruega | Doc | 90min

A provocative insight on the reasons of the global crisis provided by The Limits to Growth  authors, starting from the message they launched 40 years ago through the book:  unlimited growth in a finite planet will bring our society and environment  into overshoot and on the edge of collapse. Is there still time for a last call?

Last Ocean

2012 | Nova Zelândia | Doc | 88 min

The Ross Sea Antarctica is the pristine stretch of ocean on Earth. Scientists describe it as our last 'living laboratory', a place that can teach us about the workings of all marine ecosystems. But the fishing industry recently found its way to the Ross Sea, targeting Antarctic Toothfish and unless stopped, the natural balance of this unique ecosystem will be lost forever. The Last Ocean follows the race to protect the Ross Sea from our insatiable appetite for fish, and raises the simple ethical question: do we fish Earth’s last untouched ocean or do we protect it?
